Placement: Mathematics, Writing & ESL Classes
For more information, contact the Office of Admissions and Records, 949-451-5220, or Counseling Center, 949-451-5319.
Gades earned in high school for specific courses and unweighted cumulative high school grade point average are used for placement in math and English.
Students whose first language is not English are strongly advised to take the ESL assessment. This assessment is specifically designed to measure reading/writing and listening/speaking English skills.
PLACEMENT IN WRITING CLASSES
At Irvine Valley College, students will receive a recommendation for enrollment after completion of the guided self-placement process.
Writing 399
WR 399 is an optional, one-semester basic writing course that provides extra preparation in writing that students may take before enrolling in Writing 1. Writing 399 has a corequisite of Writing 380. Students who wish to have additional time and preparation in writing skills before taking Writing 1 may choose to enroll in this course, but they should note that research shows most students will be successful in completing Writing 1 by enrolling directly either in Writing 1 or Writing 1 with support.
Writing 1 with Support (Writing 1 + Writing 302 + Writing 382)
WR 1 with Support offers WR 1 students extra assistance in developing their writing and reading skills.
WR 1 with Support is a 3-course package, and you must enroll in all 3 classes:
- WR 1 : College Writing 1 (4 units)
- WR 302 : College Writing Skills and Support (2 units)
- WR 382 : Writing Conference (0.5 unit)
This course package offers 2 additional units of support for your WR 1 course, taught by your WR 1 instructor, plus support from other IVC English professors in the Writing Center.
Because WR 302 is a support course, the assignments and activities are all designed to help you succeed in WR 1.
Writing 1 with Language Support (Writing 1 + ESL 302 + Writing 382)
WR 1 with Language Support is designed specifically for multilingual/ESL learners who have college-level reading and writing skills but would benefit from extra linguistic support.
WR 1 with Language Support is a 3-course package, and you must enroll in all 3 classes:
- WR 1 : College Writing 1 (4 units)
- ESL 302 : Language Support for WR 1 (2 units)
- WR 382 : Writing Conference (0.5 unit)
Because ESL 302 is a support course, the assignments and activities are all designed to help you succeed in WR 1. Keep in mind that ESL 302 will not add additional homework; it will assist you with the work you have been already assigned in WR 1.
Writing 1
WR 1 is the first college-level course in composition.
IVC offers a Writing 1 with support track (see Writing 1 with Support), or a course that offers students access to our on-campus Writing Center, staffed with IVC English professors (WR 181).
Writing 2
WR 2 is the second semester writing course at the college. Students are eligible to enroll in Writing 2 only if they
- Have passed Writing 1 with a grade of “A,” “B,” “C,” or “P”; or
- *Have passed the equivalent of Writing 1 at another college or university with a grade of “A,” “B,” “C,” or “P.”
PLACEMENT IN MATHEMATICS CLASSES

-
*Complete the math guided self-placement survey. For more information, call 949-451-5315 or email ivcam@ivc.edu.
-
Submit high school transcripts verifying that they completed mathematics courses with a grade of “C” or better.

* Provide documentation confirming that they achieved Calculus or Statistics AP exam scores of 3, 4, or 5 or
-
*Have transcripts verifying that they completed a college mathematics course at an another accredited US college or university with a grade of “C” or better.
Students should have to present transcripts to the Office of Admissions and Records (SSC 110) as soon as possible before they register online, so that their eligibility can be verified and they can be cleared for registration. For more information, call 949-451-5315 or email ivcam@ivc.edu.
Assessment and Placement in ESL Classes
Non-native speakers attending IVC for the first time should take an ESL assessment before enrolling. A specially designed diagnostic test and writing sample are used to determine the reading/writing and listening/speaking skills of ESL students. After completing the assessment, students will receive class placement recommendations. All students are urged to follow these recommendations. Coursework or ESL placements from any other institution are not accepted for placement purposes. Students are allowed to reassess for ESL once during the calendar year. The reassessment must be a minimum of two weeks after the initial assessment. Students may also complete a writing sample once every six months to challenge their results. Students may call 949-451-5315 or email ivcam@ivc.edu for more information.

Assessment Services is located in the Office of Admissions and Records, SSC 110. Assessments take place in the assessment center, located in room SSC 240 of the Student Services Center. Students may contact Assessment Services by calling 949-451-5315.
