SIGN 21 BEGINNING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I4 Units - 4 hours lecture Transfers: CSU, UC This course is designed to develop the student’s ability to understand and communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). The course introduces the language of sign; the manual alphabet (finger spelling); and the basic vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and conversational conventions of ASL. The emphasis is on ASL as a visual-gestural language and on the unique cultural and linguistic features of the Deaf community. SIGN 21 is equivalent to two years of high school ASL. NR
