Return to: Program, Degree, and Certificate List
Computer-aided design (CAD) is a broad-based discipline which is integrated into a large and stable segment of the technical job market. Students wishing to develop marketable skills related to computer modeling should seek enrollment in one or more CAD courses found in the available certificates. The computer-aided design AS degree and certificate of achievement introduces students to mechanical, civil, electrical, and architectural modeling techniques that conform to both US and international industry standards. In addition to gaining intermediate and advanced knowledge of common CAD software platforms, students receive instruction on modern manufacturing methods, materials of construction, and inspection procedures. Using traditional as well as three-dimensional computer-based graphic modeling applications, laboratory assignments are designed to develop the skills that are required to produce, revise, test, animate, and interpret typical parts or assemblies.
Working professionals or students who have previous CAD experience may choose to enroll in industry-specific advanced courses or complete a certificate of proficiency to better meet their short- and long-term needs. By completing any one of the available certificates, students ensure a high level of competency within the technology while developing a strong foundation for their professional advancement.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Achieve student proficiency in the use of standard engineering analytical techniques, primarily the ability to analyze a multi-variable problem statement and provide a simplified model of the physical process with recognition of critical variables and error margins.
- Employ efficient mathematical problem-solving skills in order to solve functions which describe common engineering models.
- Use industry standard software programs to analyze and solve engineering related problems while fostering a working knowledge of the methods by which software and hardware are continuously updated to support the rapid and ever-changing technology within the engineering field.
- Define engineering terms, use software platforms, and execute business practices in order to communicate effectively at the university and professional level.
- Recognize the critical need for life-long learning within the engineering field by researching developments in manufacturing, processes, testing, and design both online and through professional networking.
- Develop soft skills and knowledge of general business practices, in order to enhance personal success and presentation.
- Explain the benefits of cost-effective degree or training pathways.
- Cultivate original portfolio work and technical skills representing mastery of specific engineering tasks which can be practically employed for further success in the job market.
- Successfully complete software certification exams as well as specific hardware-based training certificates.
