Computer-Aided Design, AS

Students majoring in computer-aided design and drafting are preparing to enter several fields in which part and assembly modeling, accurate drawing development, and manufacturing knowledge is critical. These fields include engineering, architecture, and manufacturing. The program emphasizes the universal language of software-based modeling and simulation that is used in all nearly all modern technical fields. Students completing the degree will develop the skills needed to both interpret and produce technical drawings. Laboratory experiences include the modeling and optimization of real-world parts, structures, and assemblies. These lab experiences refine the students’ abilities to interpret, analyze and transmit facts graphically according to industry standards. Courses in the major and recommended electives stress the development of basic skills in mathematics, graphical communication, and the general sciences.

The program is designed to prepare students for direct employment across a wide array of drafting and computer-aided design fields. Course content is directly coordinated to drafting based university curriculum, thereby providing students with the opportunity to meet both short- and long-range educational goals. By completing the associate degree, students gain a high level of competency with modern computer-based modeling software while developing a strong, broad-based foundation in preparation for a university degree in areas such as engineering, architecture, and manufacturing. 

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Achieve student proficiency in the use of standard engineering analytical techniques, primarily the ability to analyze a multi-variable problem statement and provide a simplified model of the physical process with recognition of critical variables and error margins.
  • Provide students with the ability to employ efficient mathematical problem-solving skills in order to solve functions which describe common engineering models.
  • Provide students with the ability to use industry standard software programs to analyze and solve engineering related problems while fostering a working knowledge of the methods by which software and hardware are continuously updated to support the rapid and ever-changing technology within the engineering field.
  • Provide students with sufficient knowledge of engineering terms, software platforms, and business practices in order to communicate effectively at the university and professional level.
  • Develop student recognition of the critical need for life-long learning within the engineering field by researching developments in manufacturing, processes, testing, and design both online and through professional networking.
  • Develop student soft skills and knowledge of general business practices, in order to enhance personal success and presentation.
  • Educate students on the benefits of cost-effective degree or training pathways.
  • Cultivate original portfolio work and technical skills representing mastery of specific engineering tasks which can be practically employed for further success in the job market.
  • Provide adequate student training and facility resources to successfully complete software certification exams as well as specific hardware-based training certificates.
