The Communication Studies curriculum emphasizes the ability to communicate effectively among a variety of contexts and audiences. Courses will focus on public speaking, argumentation, critical thinking, researching, outlining, performance skills, case construction, relationship management, and teamwork. Students will receive training on how communication is used interpersonally, within small groups, diversely, and in large audiences and mass mediated formats. The curriculum is designed to meet the educational, professional, and personal demands of our students. Students will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution with a broad range of communication coursework completed. Students majoring in Communication Studies at the lower-division level concentrate on learning how meaning is exchanged in public speaking, small group, interpersonal, and intercultural settings. Students will be able to construct and perform presentations in front of a variety of audiences, assess and evaluate presentations and performances, analyze audiences in multiple contexts, monitor individual communication skills, and research a plethora of topics.
Pursuant to SB1440, section 66756, to earn an AA-T in Communications degree, students must:
- Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of degree-applicable courses.
- Minimum overall grade point average of 2.0.
- Minimum grade of “C” (or “P”) for each course in the major.
- Completion of IGETC and/or CSU GE-Breadth.

- Research and construct positions to advocate a specific topic to an audience.
- Critically assess other speakers’ format, content, and delivery to articulate constructive feedback.
- Articulate and dissect the concepts of communication and apply them in variety of contexts.
- Critically think about how meaning is exchanged and the implications of messages.
