Drafting Technology

Computer-aided design (CAD) is not only a broad-based discipline but also a rapidly growing segment of the technical job market. Students who wish to transfer to a university engineering program or build a career in computer modeling should see enrollment in one or more CAD courses.

The complete computer-aided design certificate introduces students to mechanical, civil, electrical and architectural modeling techniques that conform to US and international industry standards. In addition to gaining intermediate and advanced knowledge of common CAD software platforms, students receive instruction on modern manufacturing methods, materials of construction, and inspection procedures. Using traditional as well as three-dimensional computer-based graphic modeling applications, laboratory assignments are designed to develop the skills that are required to produce, revise, test, animate, and interpret typical parts or assemblies.

Working professionals or students who have previous CAD experience may choose to enroll in industry-specific advanced courses or complete a certificate of proficiency to better meet their short- and long-term needs. By completing any one of the available certificates, students ensure a high level of competency within the technology while developing a strong foundation for their professional advancement.

Engineering

The primary purpose of providing engineering instruction at Irvine Valley College is to deliver a pathway to engineering success through completion of university articulated courses, which in turn allow for successful transfer into a university engineering degree program. By completing most or all of the freshman and sophomore level university engineering courses at Irvine Valley College, students are able to more accurately pinpoint their desired engineering field, while significantly reducing their overall tuition costs.

In addition, the engineering department provides advanced training in engineering methods which can be directly applied to employer requirements in technology-driven sectors such as engineering, computer-aided design, process manufacturing, quality control, industrial automation, and construction technology. By providing access to highly trained faculty, advanced software platforms, superior laboratory equipment, and a diverse set of fully articulated university-level courses, students are able to use the department’s instruction to pursue several cost-effective pathways to success at the university level or directly into the engineering support industry. Furthermore, by actively seeking labor input from advisory boards, local businesses, academic partners, and career technical advisors from the office of workforce development and the office of Research, Planning and Accreditation, the department of engineering strives to provide the most comprehensive and in-demand courses and certificates to our students.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Computer-Aided Design

Drafting Technology

Upon completion of the drafting technology program, students will be able to:

  • Create ANSI and ISO standard orthographic drawings with all necessary layers, dimensions, and call-outs to industry standards using a common CAD software platform.
  • Develop the basic knowledge of manufacturing, mechanical processes, and materials of construction used in design.
  • Develop a working knowledge of manufacturing, mechanical processes, and materials of construction used in modern design in order to efficiently discuss and draft concepts for a common manufactured part or assembly.

Engineering

Upon completion of the engineering program, students will be able to:

  • Complete necessary coursework required to successfully transfer to a university engineering program.
  • Develop a working knowledge of manufacturing, mechanical processes, and materials of construction used in modern design in order to efficiently discuss and draft concepts for a common manufactured part or assembly.
  • Develop the ability to use analytical skills to determine stresses, resultant forces, motion, or failure mechanisms in a system.
  • Develop the necessary skills required to efficiently generate a multi-feature 3D model part using a modern parametric CAD program, and by referencing the 3D model, generate orthographic projections with full dimensional annotations according to ANSI or ISO standards.
