ARTH 31 MEDIEVAL ART3 Units - 3 hours lecture Transfers: CSU, UC This course is a survey of European painting, sculpture, and architecture from the decline and fall of the Roman Empire through the rise of the great Gothic cathedrals. In addition, the course explores the Golden Age of Byzantium and its influences on the Latin West. The course investigates this epoch in history not as a “Dark Age” but rather as a major factor in the establishment and authority of Christianity throughout the world and today’s organization of modern Europe. Works of art and architecture are discussed in light of their unique cultural and historical context. NR
