Enrollment Priority

New Students and Returning Students

New students are those who have never enrolled in classes at Irvine Valley College or Saddleback College.

Returning students are those who have previously attended either Irvine Valley College or Saddleback College but have been absent from the college for a semester or more, excluding summer.

Most students new to Irvine Valley College are required to complete placement, advisement and orientation prior to registering for classes.

Students who are required to participate in placement, advisement and orientation will be notified when their application is processed. Students will not be permitted to enroll until all steps are completed. For more information, see Student Success and Support Programs.

Continuing Students

Continuing students are those who have been registered during either or both of the immediately preceding two semesters and have received at least one letter grade or “W.” Those who were registered during the semester but did not complete a course with a letter grade or “W” will have forfeited their continuing student status and must file a new application.

Freshman Advantage Students

The Freshman Advantage program rewards students for planning early. To qualify for Freshman Advantage, students must complete placement, advisement and orientation prior to the designated deadline each spring to obtain a Freshman Advantage registration time for fall. Only students who have never enrolled in college after finishing high school are eligible to be Freshman Advantage students in their first academic year. Freshmen who do not complete placement, advisement and orientation by the designated deadline will be classified as new/returning students.
