This course is a chronological, thematic and comparative study of the indigenous art of sub-Saharan Africa, the African diaspora, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Australia. The course addresses prehistoric to contemporary forms of artistic expression in these regions within their historical, geographical, religious and sociocultural contexts. In addition, the course will assess the politics of colonialism, the impact of globalization, and the Western world's economic and religious hegemony over once self-reliant kingdoms and the states in the third world.
