BIO 101 FIELD STUDIES: COASTAL MARINE ECOSYSTEMS

1 Unit - 0.5 hour lecture, 1.5 hours lab
Transfers: CSU
Limitation: Students must be able to hike, camp (tents, sleeping bags, limited showers, camp cooking) and traverse rocky intertidal habitats.
Recommended Preparation: An introductory college-level biology course and WR 1  
This field course introduces students to interrelationships among plant and animal communities and the physical environments that characterize coastal marine ecosystems. Topics will include natural history, ecology, and diversity of coastal and island ecosystems. Introductory lectures complement direct field observations and field experiments. The course is taught primarily in the field. It is intended for both science majors and non-majors. Students are limited to taking four field study courses in life sciences (BIO 101, BIO 102 , BIO 103 , BIO 104 , BIO 105 , or BIO 109 ) for a maximum of 5 units.
